Please do not remove the bus stop at 20th St. east of First Ave., which has a shelter and is used by many elderly and disabled patrons. The bus is not slowed down at this stop by people embarking or disembarking. The slow down begins once the bus gets to the First Ave. and 23rd St. stop and crawls its way west along 23rd St.

This bus stop at 20th st. and loop road/ Ave A is needed and should not be eliminated. There are many seniors, parents with children and disabled who live in this community and use this particular bus stop. It is too far to walk either to Ave C and 20th st. or 1st ave and 20th st. Eliminating this bus stop will not have any effect on speeding up an M23 select bus. There is very little traffic on 20th st. and the bus moves very quickly at these stops.

One problem with the initial stop - even using the app you don't know if the standing bus (sometimes 2 or even 3 buses) will leave in 2 minutes or 20 minutes. In cold weather it makes a difference. Have some sort of timer that let's you know when the next bus leaves. Also, to prevent bunching, have a timer that keeps buses from bunching too close together. This might interfere with taking breaks together but life is tough

The disabled veterans who use the VA hospital find it hard to cross First Avenue, so please move the westbound M23 bus stop to the eastern side of First Avenue. That will also make transfers from the northbound M15 and SBS lst Ave buses easier and quicker. Let the long-distance Express services use the west side of lst Ave & 23rd for their stop. Others have suggested this. I'd have clicked a favorable vote for that suggestion, but didn't see how to do that. Please put all new bus stops NEAR THE CORNER to make it easy to transfer, and to allow people actually to catch the bus without running for it. (The SBS stop at 25th St. & lst Ave is a prime example of thoughtless planning. Many people can't find it and riders transferring from crosstown buses can't even see where it is, two blocks away.) Delivery trucks are major obstacles on 23rd St, esp. at large stores. Another huge obstacle in the AM: school buses at the School for the Deaf. Couldn't they be required to park on 24th St to free the bus lane on 23rd St. westbound? Have consideration for the blind and elderly and disabled and parents with small children. That's a lot of people. Restore the 5th Ave stops and don't remove any more stops. The one at Lex westbound lets people walk to the 6 train without crossing Park Ave and doubling back to go uptown. Keep the 20th St./Oval stop, which is essential for old people and parents. Nobody who isn't able-bodied can traipse from the river to lst Ave, so retaining that stop is ESSENTIAL. Keeping existing stops may seem to slow the ride, but if traffic rules are rigorously enforced and bus lanes are kept clear of cars, trucks, and bikers, the bus will move quickly enough. It is not necessary to make huge revisions to the stops, installing machines, etc. It is just necessary to have police enforce all traffic rules all the time, with lots of tickets issued. It is also essential for you to pay attention to these heartfelt pleas by users of this bus route. We know from daily experience what we need, and---as seen by the block-away bus stops at 23rd and lst northbound---not all transportation planners know what they're doing. Or perhaps they are focusing on the machines and systems, but not on the actual users. Thank you, though, for soliciting comments. Consider the old people who use coins and figure out a way for them to continue doing so. They can't all walk to the subway (or even climb down to it) in order to supplement their senior metro cards. Old people are becoming ever more numerous as people live longer.

I've heard there may be changes to this route and I would say the m23 bus stop at 20th st and 20th st loop is VITAL to the community. Our community has a large amount of elderly and very young which makes walking any distance very difficult. Coming from an apartment building in the stuytown complex, which doesn't have regular traffic, makes for a long walk as it is to get to a main road that would have bus service. Please keep this vital westbound stop. Thank you.

Something that can be implemented right now at no cost is to stop what the MAT calls "bus bundling". When three buses arrive behind each other going East on 23rd Street & 7th Avenue - the first bus should proceed across the Avenue, while the Second Bus wait for one red-light on the west-side. When the light changes Second bus should proceed and Third bus should wait for one Red Light. This would significantly alleviate bus-bundling. I have requested this of the MTA several times and am always told, "it cannot be done, since the buses are on a schedule". That is a JOKE! This particular stop gets a large population of Blind & Visually impaired riders due to the location of Selis Manor on 23rd Street. It is pathetic to observe these same riders, having to wait needless amounts of time when a simple fix is there. If the buses are already "bundling" by the time they get to Seventh Avenue then something is clearly WRONG with said "schedule".

The service is inadequate for this line. There are many seniors and disabled people including blind people with service animals. This select service may not be easy for them to use or navigate. They may not get seats near the doors. People, unfortunately, who ride this bus are not very helpful towards other riders and we can’t just have a select bus service as many seniors still use their medicare card and coins to pay. If select bus service refuses that, there are no train stations nearby where they can fill their metro cards that provide either an elevator or escalator. This would seriously hamper transit for those who rely on buses and have physical issues. I would favor adding special M23 busses that then proceed up to 42 nd street stopping only at one or two spots on the east side to improve the speed of service up 1st ave especially at rush hours and daytime as many people are going to hospitals on 1 st ave and are missing connections due to traffic and overcrowding on the M23.

That Fifth Avenue Broadway, Lexington Aveenue area is in need to serious Dot help. and with 10th Avenue being a major construction mess at 30th street, returning home and going west, that backup goes from 8th avenue up to 10th avenue. This is the single WORST problem with Manhattan traffic. Until it is solved nobody can move. I agree with two others here: we need more of the smaller buses on 23rd Street. The very long ones tie up traffic for blocks in every direction when they turn. And BRING BACK the Fifth Avenue stops going east and west on 23rd Street! The DOT needs to make riders and pedestrians priority. For seniors the trek across the bowtie at 23rd and Fifth is too arduous.

There seems to be a real inefficiency of how traffic uses the short interval of the westbound green light at Third Ave. Traffic turning right will bunch in the lane 2nd-from-left, which at that point is really the middle lane (this is because parking is allowed way too close to the corner in the right/curb lane) while left-turning traffic has to come to a halt in the left lane. This leaves very little time for any vehicles to proceed, and is made worse by waits for pedestrians to cross the north side of the intersection (it is good that they cross, but there should be a vehicle-only interval). Yet eastbound traffic seems to always be totally clear here. (Might have to do with the jam-ups farther west by Park and Madison)

I take the M23 from 10th Ave to Park and it's incredibly inconsistent. One day last week, there were 4 'Out of Service' buses that passed me by starting at 6:45) - it was after 7:15 AM when the bus finally arrived. And then of course by that time, the lines of riders ready to board at 9th, 8th, 7th etc, were so long that it probably tripled the time of the trip. The SBS will undoubtedly help the situation, but it will really only be a partial solution.

Traffic is horrible during the day on 23rd and it takes forever to load passengers. SBS should improve things slightly but there should be payment machines ON the bus at all doors like many other cities and NOT at the stop. There's nothing more irritating than seeing the bus at the stop, but there's no time for you to get a prepay voucher from the machine and the bus goes away without you or the reverse when you're waiting on the bus while the bus driver waits for the 10 people stand in line to make their payment at the machine. Put machines on the bus!

On better weather days I walk from 1st avenue to Park Avenue South and BEAT the bus because it's so slow. But on bad weather days I really have no choice, and the bus sometimes takes 20+ minutes to cross a few avenuses. Ridiculous.

I've been using the Select Bus Service (SBS) for some time on 34th St. It does seem to improve both the crowding inside the bus & the amount of time at the bus stop. But I must add the lack of signage at the stops & the lack of public awareness when the program was instigated took way too long to take effect, thereby making it seem, to those that resist change, to warm to the idea. In the past few months I have not had my pass checked & this will lead to fare dodging & damage the credibility of the MTA. Bottom Line? I think it can work with better implementation then exhibited on 34th St.

Several years ago you did away with the M-23 bus stop at 5th Avenue forcing the handicapped to walk a long block fro 6th Avenue or to cross two dangerous intersections at Broadway and then 5th Avenue to get to the bus going down 5th Avenue. This is very dangerous to those who have trouble walking or are in wheelchairs.

The M23 doesn't need SBS, put SBS on 14th Street instead so that people from 14th Street AND the Lower East Side can benefit from SBS service, the M14 route is MUCH busier and MUCH more crowded than the M23.

Another reason that this is a stupid idea for M23, at the corner of Broadway going east bound there are about 6 to 8 bus routes that make turns there and stop at the M23 stop. All this bus traffic takes up pick up space and also any lane space so would stop and halt any bus traffic. We don't need SBS on 23rd St!!!!

You should make the "Add Comment" capability more user friendly. Having to drag a marker across the map is not easily figured out. Just have acomment box!!

I hate the idea of SBS for 23rd st. First Ave is the ONLY stop were this makes any sense due to the VA hospital. There is a grocery store on second ave and trucks stop ALL day long to make deliveries, so a separate lane for the SBS bus (the only way SBS makes any sense) is out of the question there, the same holds true for 3rd Ave stop as there is a Post Office on the block and there are postal trucks routinely blocking the lane. Other then that the bus moves smoothly and having to add the extra step of having to buy a separate ticket, the cost of installing and maintaining the ticket vending machines and the cost of policing the public by gangs of MTA cops boarding the bus makes this a true waste of tax dollars.

It is understood why the MTA chose this route over the M14! The (L) train runs 14th Street so that would eliminate the M14 from all talks. Other than the heavy crowds on the M23 route, Off Board Fare Collection will speed up the route. The issue surrounding the SBS is that just like the M34 and M86, it will be a LOCAL bus due to the Manhattan Crosstown operation with Off Board Fare Collection.

How did the M23 get picked for SBS over the much busier M14?

The box is often blocked at 23 and Madison, especially by express busses turning left, which prevent any westbound traffic. I once waited half an hour at Broadway for an M23, because the box-blocking just would not end.
