The George Washington Bridge was originally designed to accommodate train service between Fort Lee and Manhattan. NYCDOT should work with the Port Authority to study a "PATH North" line across the bridge, which would reduce vehicular traffic in all neighborhoods near the bridge, and allow Washington Heights residents to access the Palisades without a car.

No Crosswalk

It would be nice if there were a crosswalk somewhere down here, at this curve. People cross Haven Ave. all the time here, going to/from the cafe/bookstore and other Columbia buildings, without a crosswalk. (So, I guess they're jaywalkers.) It's kind of far to the nearest crosswalk, though.

Cars turning right from 178th onto Fort Washington Ave. fail to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk all the time. When crossing Fort Washington heading west, I often have to stand in the middle of the street, waiting for all the cars turning off of 178th to finish going so I can cross.

Cars turning onto the bridge entrance ramp from Fort Washington Ave, especially coming from the south, gun their motors and try to turn quickly, often nearly hitting me. I sometimes try to cross before the light to avoid the cards, or wait until they've all turned, but it's hard to tell, since not everyone uses their turn signals. Something needs to be done to protect pedestrians crossing 179th St. here. I've almost been hit numerous times, and have banged on car hoods that have stopped just short of hitting me. Really problematic!

When cars double park on this street, because it's so narrow, traffic trying to get around the double parked cars takes over almost the entire lane into oncoming traffic. This is really scary when you're a cyclist and face an oncoming bus in your lane.

The southeast corner has two sidewalks that meet. Yet crossing from the east side to the west side of RSD has neither a crosswalk nor a Walk-Don't Walk sign. In addition the light does not give enough time for a pedestrian to cross the street neither on the south side of 165th Street nor on the north side which does have a crosswalk. This could be corrected with a count down light that give the pedestrian more time to cross, adding a crosswalk on south side and making a pedestrian only light period controlled by a demand button.

When pedestrians have the right of way the cars turning right think they have the right of way because they have a green light. This is incredibly dangerous.
